Do you have a straight neck? Here's something you may not have thought of.

Our dally habits and behaviors change our bodies over time.

I’ve had several clients tell me that they’ve had x-rays showing that their neck is completely straight. Most people believe that this is due to time spent at the computer, or looking down at their phone all day, but one thing no one seems to think about is how their neck is positioned during sleep.

If humans were meant to sleep on pillows, we would exit the vaginal canal at birth, with a pillow in hand, but we do not—wink wink.

Pillows are a cultural norm and they’re not actually necessary

Humans have adapted to using pillows over time, so going from constantly using one to not using one can sometimes cause discomfort.

I slowly transitioned to sleeping without a pillow over the course of a year and my neck really seems to prefer it.

Check out the video below, where I show you the difference in the position of my neck with two different pillows—a super fluffy one and a fancy “neck cradling pillow”—and the natural position, just allowing my head to rest on the floor.

As you probably noticed in the video, just allowing my head to rest on the ground, or on my bed, allows my neck to retain its natural curvature. This is a good thing ;)

How to:

If you’re thinking about going pillow-less, take it one step at a time.

You can start by downsizing and bit by bit, make your way down to allowing your head to comfortably lay on your bed. If you get any kinks, aches or pains, just go back up a bit, until you’re able to comfortably sleep without the aid of a pillow.

I’m curious—are you planning on giving this a try? If so, I’d like to hear from you in the comments below.
